

Upon learning that her father disappeared, a teenaged girl dresses as a boy and travels to the city of Kyoto in hopes of finding him. On the first day in the city, she happens to witness a sword fight between some samurai and some demon warriors. Taken into custody by the samurai, she learns that they are the Shinsengumi, a group who know her father and are very interested in learning why his hospital clinic burned down so mysteriously a month before. With no family or friends to turn to, she is forced to count on the dashing and handsome members of the Shinsengumi to further her search.

The Edo Era has ended after 260 years of history and the Meiji Era begins. However, bitter strife still continues between the soldiers of the new government and former Tokugawa retainers. This is the stage in which the surviving members of the Shinsengumi find themselves upon their return to Edo following their defeat at Tobafushimi.

En route to the capital, Serizawa Kamo, one of the Miburoushigumi leaders comes across Ibuki Ryuunosuke who had been attacked by bandits. The Roushigumi are a group of people who share the same ideals, working towards the goal of becoming true samurai. As he observes the efforts of Kondou Isami and Hijikata Toshizou as they work to improve the prestige of the group, Ryuunosuke, who despises samurai, begins to question his way of life.
