Raised in Canterbury, New Zealand.
Her parents served as missionaries in Africa in the 1970s, a story she has spoken about in interviews. Left school at 16 to study journalism at the University of Canterbury.
Later earned an Honours degree in Communications and a Graduate Diploma in Journalism.
